Arthritis Types

ARTHRITIS TYPESArthritis, which mainly consists of the inflammation of one or more joints, is a very common disease among both children and adults alike, although it is more encountered more frequently among older people. It is by no means a life-threatening condition, but it can be very unpleasant and make daily living that much harder and more tiring. Severe arthritis can limit movement to such an extent that the affected person can no longer sit down or stand up as easily as it should happen normally.

If the disease is located at the level of the hands and fingers, it can even impede the completion of daily chores and tasks that we would normally carry out without any problems. Unfortunately, this disease cannot be cured, but there are some effective treatments that can improve upon the condition of those who suffer from it, drastically diminishing the extent of the symptoms.

Up to this day, scientific research has identified over 100 types of arthritis, such as osteoarthritis, otherwise known as degenerative joint disease, rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis, juvenile rheumatoid arthritis, reactive arthritis, gout, arthritis due to inflammation of the intestines and septic arthritis. However, out of all of them, there are some that are more frequent than others. Their development is triggered and influenced by a variety of both internal and external factors. Perhaps the most frequent are osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis and gout.

Osteoarthritis

This is the most common out of all the types of arthritis that have been diagnosed until now. It can be caused by either some form of trauma or damage at the level of a joint, such as wrists or knees, or by old age. Women over the age of 50 are especially prone to developing this disease because of the hormonal imbalance that appears at that moment in their lives. The characteristic inflammation brought upon by this condition is caused by the friction of the bones, and it can lead to insufferable pain. The symptoms of this illness should not be ignored, because an early diagnosis is the best way to stop its development and lessen its unpleasant symptoms.

Rheumatoid arthritis

This is an autoimmune disease, which means that the immune system is disturbed and turns against the body instead of protecting it. Unfortunately, this type of arthritis can be encountered in children as well as adults. But, if the disease is diagnosed early, it can be controlled by physical exercise, adequate diet and minor surgical procedures.

Gout

Gout is a type of arthritis that is more frequent in men rather than in women. It manifests itself mainly through sudden and painful bursts. Gout attacks are strongly connected to dietary habits, appearing especially in men that abuse alcohol and women that are entering menopause. Its symptoms occur mostly at night or in the morning and are often located in the toes, knees and wrists. This illness responds well to a diet change and specific medicines. People that suffer from gout should avoid certain foods and alcohol, especially beer, and exercise regularly.
