Arthritis is a disease that affects a large number of people as they age. Fortunately, according to studies, arthritis pain may become a thing of the past with only some minor modifications in your daily diet.
A recent, ongoing research, led by British scientists is working to see how the bacteria found in the gut and mouth can affect the immune system and cause a host of crippling inflammatory conditions. The research is supposed to be finished in five years and the scientists hope to find life changing therapies during this time. The study itself will involve analyzing trillions of gut microbes in order to determine if they can cure a disease such as rheumatoid arthritis by treating the causes instead of the symptoms.
Scientists have a positive opinion about the work they are trying to accomplish with the project, being certain that their work will lead to preventative medicines or methods of treatment as simple as a change in our diets.
Former studies have demonstrated that it is possible to get rid of arthritis pain by consuming certain foods such as fish, nuts, vegetable and spices. There is a long list of foods that have benefic properties which help you cope with arthritis conditions. Among these foods are tinned sardines, Brazil nuts, mushrooms, cherries, turmeric, ginger, broccoli, kale and garlic. Olive oil is known to poses a certain molecule called olecanthal, which has similar effects to Ibuprofen.
Much of the food mentioned, such as fruit, vegetables, wholegrains and oily fish, are all part of what is generally known as the Mediterranean diet.
The Mediterranean cuisine is considered to be one of the healthiest cuisines in the world. It has even been proven that people who eat a Greek diet, which is another term for the Mediterranean diet, tend to have a significantly lower risk of developing rheumatoid arthritis than the people who have a diet filled with high fat sugary foods.
According to Professor Fiona Powrie, director of the Kennedy institute of Rheumatology in Oxford, the main objective of the research is to see if there are any connections between gut bacteria, rheumatoid arthritis and other forms of arthritis, in order to modify the intestinal bacteria by using certain types of food.
The scientists involved in the project hope to improve people’s lives by taking away their need to consume high amounts of drugs just so they would deal with arthritis. Some of the people who had arthritis for a long period of time have stated that if the research has positive results their entire lives would change for the good.
Arthritis is a serious disease that affects 10 million people just in the UK, without counting the rest of the world. It normally occurs when the cartilage between the bones erodes and the joints start to rub together. If this wasn’t enough, of the 10 million people suffering from arthritis, 600000 have rheumatoid arthritis which is incurable. This type of arthritis is caused by a faulty immune system. The immune system starts attacking its own cells, causing the joints to become stiff and painful.
